Class II, division 1 malocclusion -
protruding front teeth - can often be managed without extractions in the young
patient using a functional appliance to correct the increased overjet (the
horizontal distance between the upper and lower front teeth) and the bite of the
back teeth.
In Example A only a
removable functional appliance was used to correct the 10 mm
overjet. This treatment was remarkably quick and only took 9
months.
n Example B a
functional appliance was used to correct the overjet and
afterwards the spaces between the front teeth were closed with
fixed appliances. This treatment took about 18 months.
